Charles Harrison is a native Houstonian.  Showing musical acumen at an early age, he attended magnet schools for music, studying voice and piano, while taking private lessons. His earliest musical experiences occurred in church. As a teenager, Charles served as the youth choir pianist at the Oliver Chapel Baptist Church. He also organized the first gospel choir solely comprised of seniors at Evan E. Worthing High School. Their debut concert was held at Blueridge Baptist Church in February 1997.
 
He furthered his education at Prairie View A&M University and graduated with a dual degree in voice and piano. While there, he assisted in preparing the school’s Concert Chorale for performances in Poland. In 2007, Charles received a Master of Music degree from the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music. While a graduate student, Charles frequently conducted the Men’s Choir.  He was also a baritone in the renowned Choral Artists and the professional chorale, Cantare. After an award-winning stint as a secondary choir educator in the Houston Independent School District, Charles opted to bring his skills to The Presbyterian School, where he serves as Upper School music director.
 
Charles seeks to initiate dialogue on diversifying black church music via training, educating, and regularly incorporating varied liturgical repertoire into the worship experience. He is contemplating a doctorate degree in ethnomusicology. Charles has served as Minister of Music at Jones Memorial United Methodist Church since 1997. He has been married to Dameka Harrison since 2007. They are the proud parents of two beautiful daughters.
